Georgetown entered the 1995-1996 season with big expectations and a Top 5 preseason ranking. A large part of that was due to the return of sophmore sensation Allen Iverson. John Thompson's Hoyas were far from a one man show though with a stable of talented players like Jerome Williams, Victor Paige, Othella Harrington and Jahidi White on the roster.
After finishing 13-5 during conference play, Georgetown won the Big 7 division of the BIG EAST and making it to the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game to face UConn in what would become an instant classic.
The Hoyas entered the NCAA Tournament as the 3 seed in the South Region where they easily advanced to the Sweet 16 after defeating Mississippi Valley State and New Mexico. Georgetown erased a 3 point 1st half deficit to beat Texas Tech by 8, 98-90 to reach the Elite 8.
A loss to #1 UMass ended the career of one of college basketball's best. Allen Iverson finished the season with averages of 25-4-5, was a consensus 1st Team All-American and 2-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of The Year.
